Building Strong Vocabularies with Books in Homes
Dear Partner,

We know that having books in the home plays an important role in a child's literacy skill development. This development, however, starts earlier than you might think.

Children living in under resourced communities can begin kindergarten two years behind their classmates in language and vocabulary. The reason for these differences is related to the number of words they have been exposed to in the first few years of life: 31 million children living in poverty, on average, have smaller vocabularies than their more affluent peers.

We can help these children by making sure all families have lots of books in their homes. We provide children as young as three years old with the opportunity to choose books, and, believe me - even our youngest readers know exactly who their favorite characters are, which animals they'd like to learn more about, and what they want to be when they grow up. We invite you to share these experiences with the young children in your life and watch them build their vocabularies as they learn to love reading.

Best,
